1) We Belong to the Earth
Words attributed to Chief Noah Sealth
Whale song from The Sounds of Nature c. The Special Music Co.
Music by Pat York c. 2005
Vocals, djembe: Pat York
Vibes, chimes, shaker; Jeff Dowdy
The earth does not belong to us, we belong to the earth
The earth does not belong to us, we belong to the earth
This we know; all things are connected; all things are connected like the
blood in one family
All things are connected, this we know, this we know
Whatever befalls the earth, befalls the sons and the daughters of the earth
Whatever befalls the earth, befalls the sons and the daughters of the earth
This we know, this we know.
We did not weave the web of life; we are merely a strand in it
We did not weave the web of life; we are merely a strand in it
This we know. All things are connected, all things are connected, all things
are connected, this we know, this we know.
Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves.
2) Pounds Hollow
Guitar, Vocals: Pat York
Synthesizer wooden flute: Jeff Dowdy
Ride symbol, shaker, chimes: Logan Dowdy
Pounds Hollow was the first major recreation area constructed by
the Civilian Conservation Corps on the newly established Shawnee
National Forest.
Come sit by my side
and I’ll tell you a story
Of a vision passed on by those now gone
A new forest was shaping from the lands nobody wanted
And she’ll take a hundred years or more to grow tall.
But the people needed a place to escape to
And the men needed jobs to keep their families fed
So they damned up the river and built a place to gather
They built a refuge everlasting.
Chorus
Pounds Hollow, the work of Roosevelt’s men
An Oasis among these destitute lands
A vision of a new Shawnee Forest
Your legacy lives on today
Generations have played in your river-fed waters
The laughter of all of your children still heard
And now a winding path leads from lakeshore to shelter
And your permanence lies in your stone and your song
(Chorus)
3) The
Inevitable
Guitar, Vocals: Pat York
Base & lead guitars: Jeff Dowdy
Drums, Congo’s, Keyboard: Logan Dowdy
(Chorus)
We come from the water and to the water we’ll return
We come from the earth and to the earth we will return
We’re born of the spirit and to the spirit we’ll return
And the waves will continue to roll
Yes the waves will continue to roll
They roll through my house, they roll through my land
They roll through my village and all around my Island
And the waves will continue to roll
And the earth will continue to rock
It rocks through my house, it rocks through my land
It rocks through my neighborhood and all around the town
And the earth will continue to rock
(Chorus)
And the wind will continue to swirl
Yes the wind will continue to swirl
It swirls through my house, it swirls through my land
It swirls through my neighborhood and all around the town
And the wind will continue to swirl
(Chorus)
And the sun will continue to shine
Yes the sun will continue to shine
It shines through my house, it shines through my land
It shines in my neighborhood and all around the world
And the sun will continue to shine
Yes the sun will continue to shine, oh yeah 4) The Eagle and the Hawk
by John Denver
Guitar, vocals: Pat York
I am the eagle, I
live in high country
In rocky cathedrals that reach to the sky
I am the hawk and there’s blood on my feathers
The time is still turning they soon will be dry
And all those who see me and all who believe in me
Share in the freedom I feel when I fly
Come dance in the west wind and touch on the mountain top
Sail o’er the canyon and up to the sky
Reach for the heavens and hope for the future
And all those who can be and not what they are
5) The Lands
Nobody Wanted
Vocals, guitar: Pat York
Base & lead guitar: Jeff Dowdy
Drums: Logan Dowdy
He hunted and lived
on the land of his father
For 10,000 years they had everything
A rich land of game, water and beauty
He lived to enjoy each day
Then along came the Frenchmen who lived close beside him
They traded for things he’d not seen
They shared this rich land and traveled her rivers
They grew to have mutual respect, for each other
These were the lands that everyone wanted
They were rich and the water ran pure
But fate had her way, he was not meant to stay
On the land of his ancestors
They came in by wagon, they came by the rivers
Their numbers were greater than stars in the sky
They cut all the trees, they plowed all the fields
Til the rivers ran shallow and dry
Then the land gave way, erosion ran deep
And the cropland turned wasteland and blew away
Their savings all gone, they had nothing to show for it
They realized they had to move on
These were the lands that nobody wanted
They were bare and the water ran brown
But fate had her way, they were not meant to stay
On the land that they stole from the Shawnee tribe
In ’39, after 10 years of waiting
A national forest was born
To restore the forest and protect the rivers
For the next generation to guard
These are the lands that everyone wanted
They are rich and the waters run pure
And fate has her way; she will be here to stay
On the land of our predecessors

6) Scarborough Fair/Canticle
Traditional Folk, Counter Melody by
Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel
Guitars: Jeff Dowdy
Vocals: Pat York
Are you going to
Scarborough Fair, Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.
Remember me to the one who lives there,
She was once a true love of mine.
Tell her to make me a cambric shirt,
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme,
Without no seams nor needlework
Then she’ll be a true love of mine.
Tell her to find me an acre of land:
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme,
Between the salt water and the sea strands,
Then she’ll be a true love of mine
On the side of a hill in the deep forest green
Tracing of sparrow on snowcrested brown.
Blankets and bedclothes, the child of the mountain
Sleeps unaware of the clarion call.
Washes the grave with silvery tears
A soldier cleans and polishes a gun
Sleeps unaware of the clarion call
War bellows blazing in scarlet battalions.
Generals order their soldiers to kill,
And to fight for a cause they’ve long ago forgotten
She was once a true love of mine
She was once a true love of mine.
7) Breaths
Ysaye Barnwell
Vocals, djembe, shaker: Pat York
Listen more often
to things than to beings.
Listen more often to things than to beings.
‘
Tis the ancestor’s breath when the fire’s voice is heard
‘
Tis the ancestor’s breath in the voice of the waters.
Those who have died have never, never left
The dead are not under the earth
They are in the rustling trees
They are in the groaning woods
They are in the crying grass
They are in the moaning rocks
The dead are not under the earth
Those who have died have never, never left
The dead have a pact with the living
They are in the woman’s breast
They are in the wailing child
They are with us in our homes
They are with us in this crowd
So listen more often to things than to beings.
Listen more often to things than to beings
(Round)
Listen more…., listen more…, listen more…
8) Wilderness
Trail
Guitar, Vocals: Pat York
Mandolin: Jeff Dowdy
Congo’s: Logan Dowdy
With the wind at
my back,
Got my dog and my cowboy hat
I’m riding so high
I feel I can fly
With the sun and blue skies
I can see o’er a thousand miles
I’m riding so light
I feel I’m in flight
I’m riding my wilderness trail
I’m riding my wilderness trail
I’m riding my wilderness trail
The river runs deep
My heart yearns to feel her soul
Her life force within
Changing over again
And when I return
I’ll watch her run through me;
I’ll drink from her cup
Drink her lessons right up
That change is a part of the tale
As we’re riding our wilderness trail
I’m riding my wilderness trail
9) Spirit of the
Earth
Guitar & Base: Jeff Dowdy
Drums: Logan Dowdy
Vocals: Pat York
I wanna fly high
on the mountainside
I wanna soar easy in the ocean breeze
I wanna feel small by the riverside
Open my heart; bare my soul to the spirit of the earth
Come with me my brother, let’s fly away
Come with me my sister, let your troubles fall away
Let the fire renew me, let the water run through me
Let the wind whisper to me, how to live on this land.
(Repeat) 10) We Are Children of the Forest
